Ever since Artificial Intelligence (AI) was first invented, it has had a huge impact on various aspects of people's lives across the globe. It can come in different forms, from personalized recommendations on apps to advanced medical diagnostics or even as Chat GPT where you get help from all kinds of matters. As AI becomes more apparent in our lives, it is reshaping the way we live, work, and interact. However, it is a double-edged sword, as it can be taken advantage of for bad purposes. In a discussion with interested students in my high school, we talked about how we can use AI in ethical ways and not to abuse it.
A tool to improve life quality
Currently in health, Google's MED-PALM2 has passed the physician licensing exam with an expert-level score, allowing it to diagnose diseases and plan treatments just like any doctor. In education, AI can help with the grading and the curriculum, saving teachers plenty of time to correct students' work and preparing for the lesson. In manufacturing, many companies have incorporated robots into workflows to do dangerous or tedious tasks to increase efficiency and reduce risks on humans' lives.
A friend in times of help
Asking questions to chatbots, writing emails with suggestions from the system, clicking on songs suggested by websites, is how billions of people around the world use AI every day. More specifically, students can use AI to explain hard concepts or help to generate ideas, while customers can get guidance and suggestions straight from chatbots on the website.
A reason for laziness
Despite all the convenience AI offers, it can be seen as a way for people to be dependent on the technology, neglecting critical thinking and problem-solving skills. For example, creativity will be reduced as more people choose to use AI for essays or their arts, which will both badly damage the artists’ images and their only source of income. Moreover, students can misuse this powerful technology to handle their homework and not use their own abilities to do them.
These implications of AI on people’s lives mentioned above are only the tip of the iceberg. There are certainly more ways to use AI that we have not discovered or discussed about. While we recognized the power of AI and its ability to enhance our world, we also realized that we need to use it responsibly and ethically to avoid negative consequences in the future. Only through spreading awareness and education could we promote the safe and healthy use of AI in order to secure a bright future for all
